Oakland University’s School of Engineering and Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the SEMI Foundation, will host “Semiconductor Day” from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22 in the Oakland Center Founders Ballroom on the campus of Oakland University.

“Everything with an on and off switch has a semiconductor,” said Rick VanIttersum II, program manager for SCAN (SEMI Career and Apprenticeship Network) Michigan at the SEMI Foundation. “Semiconductors enable the apps, gadgets, and technology of today’s digital world and will empower the miracles of tomorrow.

“Semiconductor Day highlights the advancements and career opportunities made possible through microelectronics to students and new talent and how it will impact Michigan,” VanIttersum said.

In the morning, Oakland University’s School of Engineering, the GEAR UP program, and the SEMI Foundation will host 75 local high school students from Pontiac High School, International Technology Academy, and Oak Park High School as part of the Semiconductor Day event. While on campus, high school students will get a guided tour of the School of Engineering, visit its state-of-the-art semiconductor research and development facility, and complete hands-on activities designed to build interest in semiconductors.

To meet anticipated demand for microelectronics, the semiconductor industry workforce projects to add more than 100,000 jobs in the United States by 2030. Michigan currently ranks in the top 10 in the nation for semiconductor workforce with job growth projected to grow by at least 11% in the next five years.

On “Semiconductor Day,” attendees will discover career opportunities available in the semiconductor industry and engage with companies through interactive experiences. Attendees will be able to:

• Sign up for “Ask an Expert” mentoring

• Have your resume reviewed

• Get interview tips

• Attend “A Day in the Life” talks

• Participate in a VR semiconductor experience

• Learn about internships

• Meet industry employers

“Semiconductor Day gives you the opportunity to connect with companies playing key roles in the technology that is creating our exciting future,” said Hongwei Qu, a professor on the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Oakland University.

Lori Crose, director of PACE. Commented that “Career options in the semiconductor industry, particularly in Michigan, will be on the grow as the state explores options to expand semiconductor manufacturing companies.”

Lunch and soft drinks will be provided. The first 100 registrants will also receive a free T-shirt and SEMI prize pack.
